First if there is a BIOS option to choose primary graphics, set to Intel if that is good enough. It could be the nouveau driver is trying to run and crashing out. You may need a custom Xorg.conf file to force the issue of which chipset to use. Next, look in /var/log/Xorg.* for lines with EE. These are the errors that you can google for some more advice. Third, check nvidia site to see if beta drivers offer any support for the newest chipsets and give it a try. I have had no problems with their beta drivers in the past.

The nouveau driver I find seems to work fine usually but a wee bit slow with Gnome Shell. I have a Lenovo laptop with a GeForce 7300 onboard and it works great with Gnome Shell until I go add the nvidia drivers and on a reboot/login, get nothing but a blank screen. It appears that some nvidia cards have trouble and it seems theres little to be done at this moment in time - hopefully it may get better as time goes on.
