Sound Not Working In Fedora 15

Hi All, I have been searching the forums/google for the last several days and don't know what else to do. I recently switched to Linux from Windows, so I am a bit of a newbie. After installing Fedora-15-x86_64-Live-KDE, I cannot get my sound to work at all. I am using an HDMI cable to connect my display and am trying to use it for the sounds as well. The motherboard I have (ASRock E350M1 AMD E-350 APU (1.6GHz, Dual-Core) AMD A50M Hudson M1 Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo) has a Realtek ALC892 audio chipset. When I attempted to install the most recent drivers, LinuxPkg_5.15rc21.tar.bz2, I can't install it because it cannot find autoconf.h. So my main question at this point is how do I get that? I tried re-installing my kernel, 2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64, but that didn't change anything.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

    Hello and Welcome!

I'm not up to speed on using HDMI to convey sound. But maybe a bit of help for those who are...
Upon booting to Fedora, open up a terminal. As root, do the following:
    Code:
    tail -20 dmesg
    lspci -vnn
    Post back with the results.

Also, post the output of the command: aplay -l

and if aplay -l shows some playback devices and you don't hear sound, try this

    Code:
    alsaunmute
    then this

    Code:
    alsamixer
to pump up the volume. You may need to first do:

    Code:
    yum install alsa-utils
For a while there, Fedora would happily install the drivers for my sound card and then mute the speakers automatically upon reboot...

Sorry, I suspect that the tail should have limited the output from the first issue, but here is the entire thing:

    [root@media-server ~]# tail -20 dmesg
tail: cannot open `dmesg' for reading: No such file or directory
    [root@media-server ~]# lspci -vnn

when i run alsamixer, i get the gui that lets me select the hdmi sound card. I can see that it is not muted, but what do I need to do to pump up the volume?

Thanks again for the quick replies.

So, strictly speaking, you have 2 audio devices: an on-board chip, and an HDMI sound card.
And both are loading with the same driver: snd-hda-intel

I don't have any experience with HDMI cards, but there have been some posts on the web about folks with this issue.
I'll do some searching on how to disable the on-board device. Hopefully, that might lead to a solution.

So I've still been trying to figure this out. After searching around, someone had mentioned using
    Code:
     /usr/bin/alsa-info.sh
to provide my system setting to other people. I did that, and the results are on the alsa-projects website (db/?f=896a5a879017423acd6814532640c7eae5db9ba9)

Another suggestion I saw was to use speaker-test, but that also give me an error:
    Code:
     # speaker-test -D plughw:0,3 -c 2 /dev/urandom

    speaker-test 1.0.24.1

    Playback device is plughw:0,3
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy

Next, I tried to create a ~/.pulse/client.conf file, to try and stop pulseaudio from starting up, as some people had said that was an issue. That still didn't solve my problem.

Any other thoughts on what might be going on?

Thanks again for all of the responses.

Another thing that I am trying to do is install realtek-linux-audiopack-5.15 drivers I found online. However, when I try to install these following the steps in the readme, I get the follow error:
    Code:
The file /lib/modules/2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64/source/include/INCLUDE_VERSION_H does not exist.
Please install the package with full kernel sources for your distribution
or use --with-kernel=dir option to specify another directory with kernel
    sources (default is /lib/modules/2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64/source).
/lib/modules/2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64/source is a symbolic link to /lib/modules/2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64/build, which is itself a symbolic link to ../../../usr/src/kernels/2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64
The last directory is empty. Does fedora normally install things in this directory? I tried to reinstall the kernel headers, but I think I am stuck in an infinite loop:

    Code:
     # yum install kernel-headers-2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64
    Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
    Setting up Install Process
Package matching kernel-headers-2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64 already installed. Checking for update.
    Nothing to do
So I thought maybe I need to reinstall, but that gives me:
    Code:
    # yum reinstall kernel-headers-2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64
    Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
    Setting up Reinstall Process
    No Match for argument: kernel-headers-2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64
Package(s) kernel-headers-2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64 available, but not installed.
    Nothing to do
Any advice if this is even the right path, or am I just making more problems for myself in areas I don't need to be in?

    Thanks again

I just had a similar problem with my SL6.1 laptop, and found that I needed to change the output from analog to digital. Now I get sound. You can (and do) have multiple sound cards, and they may have the same driver. You need to open the sound control icon, select preferences, select the hardware you want to use, select the Profile combo box in the hardware tab and select "Digital Stereo Output". Then test the speakers - there is a tab next to the Profile box to test the speakers. Try different combinations until you get the sound to work.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
