Additional/optional software packages one expects. When I installed Scientific Linux 6.1 (another clone of RHEL 6.1) I had the same experience.

I figured it was extra software but the install never asked me for the 2nd DVD. What software and when do you use it?

You could mount the dvd and list the directory containing the rpms.
But as installations and updates are usually done via the network anyway: Looking on the dvd content is probably jsut for curiositiy sake. You must always face the curtain with a bow.

so if you do a yum update the 2nd dvd is not needed is that correct?

In the end it depends on how your repo configuration in /etc/yum.repos.d looks like.
But I believe the default installation only defines network-reachable repos.
So yes: 2nd dvd should be not needed. You must always face the curtain with a bow.

Basically, the 2nd disc contains optional rpms and repos. They are useful if you are installing stuff on a non-networked system. For example, I have family in parts of Mexico where the nearest Internet cafe is about 10 miles away and they don't have internet available in their village. Their son installed Linux and a lot of the optional packages using the DVD's I sent him. When he connects up at school (he's an engineering major at the Technical University of Oaxaca) or the Internet cafe, he can use the network to get updates, but the initial installation was all done via the DVDs.
