I am having a bit of problem understanding the following statement (although it does work)
yum install @office
Now the problem is with the @office part.

Question about yum install
I am having a bit of problem understanding the following statement (although it does work)
yum install @office
Now the problem is with the @office part.
When i did
> yum list available '*office*'
I got liboffice,koffice etc but nothing called office alone ??
So why did it work ??
and what does placing an @ before office do ?? AS far as i know yum could only install things which are defined in its repository. So if "office" wasn't there how did it get installed?

I believe that the @ signifies a "Group install", I think you can do the same thing with @kde or @gnome.

Hm okay what about the "office" part. The word office was no where to be found. For Further reference here is what i got
notice there is no "office" above so how did yum manage to install an office ?? The "*" before and after the word office makes it a wildcard search.Code:yum list available "*office*"
So basically anything with the string office in the name is listed.Jay

so if there was a simple "office" there i believe it would have showed up. and since it didnt then how did yum know what that was ?? since it could only retrive data that is available

After a few Googles, I believe that the command
Will translate toCode:yum install @office
which will install the entire LibreOffice suite.Code:yum groupinstall "Office/Productivity"

Like Miketbob said, the @ means that office is a group name. You can do this command to view info about the group:
and you can do this to see available and installed yum groups:Code:yum groupinfo office
On my system anyway, it appears that "Office/Productivity" is some sort of alias for "office" (or vice versa).Code:yum grouplist
