Recently my company purchased an Equallogic SAN what I would like to do is share a LUN on this between several front end web servers such that they are all using the same data/code to serve pages. In front of these web servers is a load balancer so I do not need HA/shared IPs.

So what confuses me is that GFS2 is always shown to be used with clustering. Is this necessary? Do the various hosts need to be aware of each other beyond what they can see on the LUN? Or can they simply mount the GFS2 volumes and handle things from there (Grab an available journal and go)?

Essentially I am envisioning this as a sort of drop in replacement for NFS but allowing me to use the redundancy in the SAN.

Thanks for any thoughts!
