The asus M4A78LT-M LE mobo uses VT1708S Audio CODEC. I am only interested in getting sound from standard stereo jack on rear of mobo. Sound works OK in Windows. Has anyone solved this problem. Of course volume is all the way up.

Did you check to see if the appropriate hardware was selected in the audio sound preferences tool on the top menu bar of the display? Open the Hardware tab, and then the output tab to see if the correct selections have been made. Sometimes it is as simple as the fact that the default (front vs. back outputs for example) settings are incorrect.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
