I would first check and make sure telnet is not blocked by your firewall. Next I'd check to make sure the telnet daemon is up and running. You're sure your network is running? Can you contact this or other boxes by using ftp or ssh?

    Several basics

    1. Can I ping the box I want to get to?
    2. Is telnet accepted on the box I want to get to?
    3. Do you really want to use telnet?

Why not use ssh? Most boxes I setup telnet is not even installed or activated.

Agreed. ssh beats the pants off of telnet for me too.
