problems in changing red hat directory server port number

I changed the port number for one of the Directory Server's (red hat) instances, when I restarted the server, I could not logon to the directory server nor the admin console
So I edited the dse.ldif file and changed the port number back to 389(I had changed it to 3890), now the admin console is working.
However, under the admin console, the directory server is still registered as running using port 3890 and I can;t log into the directory server admin to change the port number back
I am using RHEL server 6.3 x86_64 and Red hat directory server 9.0
    any help is appreciated

    thanks
