    Stubborn piece of software... lol

    Code:
    sudo rm /tmp/vsftpd.log
    sudo touch /tmp/vsftpd.log
    sudo chown 0:0 /tmp/vsftpd.log
    sudo chmod 644 /tmp/vsftpd.log
    Then restart the server and try again, please.

    EDIT: I also corrected the vsftpd.conf file. The line containing 'listen=true' , should read 'listen=YES'.

    EDIT2: I was not able to reproduce your exact issue here. Non-existent /tmp/vsftpd.log was created. And if I made an empty file owned by another user, vsftpd would just happily overwrite (or append) it. Weird :/

    EDIT3: I also used the correct user you actually wanted to use for this (if I understand correctly). This should get you straight into /var/www/html/retention if that is the correct users' home directory of course.

    Code:
    listen_port=5555
    pasv_min_port=5556
    pasv_max_port=5557
    port_enable=NO
    listen=YES
    anon_world_readable_only=false
    dual_log_enable=yes
    log_ftp_protocol=yes
    vsftpd_log_file=/tmp/vsftpd.log
    xferlog_file=/tmp/vsftpd.log
    write_enable=true
    anon_upload_enable=true
    anon_mkdir_write_enable=true
    anon_other_write_enable=true
    seccomp_sandbox=no
    local_enable=no

    run_as_launching_user=false
    ftp_username=development
    nopriv_user=development
    Here is, once more the way to reset everything:

    Code:
    sudo chmod 644 /etc/vsftpd.conf
    sudo chown 0:0 /etc/vsftpd.conf
    sudo rm /tmp/vsftpd.log
    sudo touch /tmp/vsftpd.log
    sudo chown 0:0 /tmp/vsftpd.log
    sudo chmod 644 /tmp/vsftpd.log
    sudo chown 0:0 /var/www/html /var/www
    sudo chmod 755 /var/www/html /var/www
    sudo chown development:ftp /var/www/html/retention
    sudo chmod 750 /var/www/html/retention
    Then try again.

    Ok, I tried replacing with the above entries to the vsftpd.conf and a no go with the following:
    Status: Connecting to 172.16.0.114:5555...
    Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
    Response: 500 OOPS: failed to open xferlog log file:/tmp/vsftpd.log
    Error: Critical error
    Error: Could not connect to server

    I tried adding it. The server won't start.

    After all is said and done, I almost think it is worth dumping the whole thing and reinstalling it. Problem is I can uninstall it fine, I just do not know if I reinstall, will the problems reoccur? The user development is a local user. That user is part of the ftp group. It has full rights to the /var/www/html directory. The home directory for that user is /var/www/html. What am I missing?

    A re´nstall will not guarantee anything. If you have the time to do it, please do. Otherwise, try the file below as /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf. I'm disabling logging now.

    /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf :

    Code:
    listen_port=5555
    pasv_min_port=5556
    pasv_max_port=5557
    port_enable=NO
    listen=YES
    anon_world_readable_only=false
    write_enable=true
    anon_upload_enable=true
    anon_mkdir_write_enable=true
    anon_other_write_enable=true
    seccomp_sandbox=no
    local_enable=no

    run_as_launching_user=false
    ftp_username=development
    nopriv_user=development

    dual_log_enable=no
    log_ftp_protocol=no
    #vsftpd_log_file=/tmp/vsftpd.log
    #xferlog_file=/tmp/vsftpd.log

    How is that possible?

    Command: PWD
    Response: 257 "/"
    with:

    development:1002:50:development:/var/www/html:/bin/bash
    and:

    run_as_launching_user=false
    ftp_username=development
    nopriv_user=development
    I always mentioned /etc/vsftpd.conf, but this should be /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf(!) to contain the changes could you check this again? At all times, make sure you restart the vsftpd server when applying changes to it's config file.

    yes, i picked up on that. I just not see the need to inform you that you had a typo. I just corrected it and went on. I have restarted the vsftpd server service each time a change was made.

    Ok when I try changing the "run_as_launching_user=true" and connect as anonymous, I can connect with no delay. I just have to change directories by typing the paths until I get to the retention folder. Then I can click the folder and upload fine.

    drwxrwxrwx. 6 root root 4096 Jan 29 07:38 /var/www
    drwxrwxrwx. 26 development ftp 4096 Jan 29 07:38 /var/www/html
    That is definitly not safe, could be the cause why vsftpd is not going any further.

    Code:
    sudo chmod 775 /var/www \
    /var/www/html
    I assume that the rest of your directory tree has remained unchanged (e.g. / and /var and /var/www/html/retention).
