If you wanted to install a different version of gcc, say 4.6.2 download the tar.gz from one of the mirrors listed at gcc.gnu.org/mirrors.html GCC mirror sites

Once finished downloading do the following:
    tar xzf gcc-4.6.2.tar.gz
    cd gcc-4.6.2
    ./contrib/download_prerequisites
    cd ..
    mkdir objdir
    cd objdir
    $PWD/../gcc-4.6.2/configure --prefix=/opt/gcc-4.6.2
    make
    make install

That should take care of you. Let us know how it turns out. =)

The good thing is that you can have multiple versions of the gcc suite installed on your system. The default will still be 4.4, but when you install a newer one, then the compilers will be /usr/bin/gccNN, /usr/bin/g++NN, etc. where NN is the version. So, you just set the CC or CPP variable in your Makefiles to use the one you want, or set them as environment variables.
