    Smile back to F17 (KDE)

I returned to the previous version F17 with KDE as desktop and shutdown, rebooot, logoff and ctrl-alt-F2 works fine again.

    All future comments remain welcome.

    Despite everything, thanks anyway.

You should not be angry that nobody dares to open the *.gz file. The risk is too high. It may contain everything, from $ rm fR * to ssl tunnel to the Server of O.
If you have any messages to announce you may paste them directly into the post. The chances of getting a reply would be much greater.
F17 is better than F18, so I don't see what is the problem.
If you don't have the latest F17 kernel (kernel-3.9.5-101.fc17-i686 OR kernel-3.9.5-101.fc17.x86_64 OR the PAE version, depending on the hardware) you may upgrade the kernel.
    1. Install the new kernel WITHOUT deleting the old one.
    2. Upon Boot switch-over to the new kernel. If the things do not go south you may continue, even without removing the old kernel (which is not an entirely bad idea for in the event of kernel failure in the future you would have an emergency case scenario to rescue the disk data).
    3. You may delete the old kernel either by yum or in Add/Remove Software (write in the searchbox: kernel) and remove the old kernel. Upon boot you should have at least 1 valid kernel installed.
    4. If the kernel makes fatal system errors you may reinstall it with some aerobatics (delete and immediately after that reinstall the kernel WITHOUT any reboot or log out, etc.)

Today, June 21, 2013, the latest update version of F17 for the Kernel is 3.8.13-100.fc-x86-64. Only F18 have already version 3.9.xx.
Do you use another yum repository? Or do you want that I install the kernel of F18 in my F17 environment?
In F18 I had the problems and not in F17. F17 is an earlier release. As previously reported, in F17 the problems do not occur.

So I like to know where I'm working on. Do you think it's a kernel problem and it isn't due to an unstable Fedora 18?

RE: Today, June 21, 2013, the latest update version of F17 for the Kernel is NOT 3.8.13-100.fc-x86-64
    BUT kernel-3.9.5-101.fc17.x86_64.rpm
For further details see: RPM resource kernel
    Anyway.

RE: Do you use another yum repository?
I use Google. Yum repo is what you add to it (besides the basic repo, provided by the distro).

RE: Or do you want that I install the kernel of F18 in my F17 environment?
It is none of my business to take such a decision.

RE: In F18 I had the problems, and not in F17.
You are not the only one having problems with F18. You were lucky that you were able to install F18 at all. Some of the reviews claim that the F18 installer is potentially dangerous (whatever this may mean).

RE: F17 is an earlier release.
So what. This is a classical optimization problem. Your objective it to make an OS that will make optimal use of the computer resources, where optimal means, without limiting to:
    - reliability = MAX
    - functionality = MAX
    - load and shut-down times = MIN
    - failsafe operation = MAX
    - accessability = MAX
    - amendment in skills of the user = MIN
If you make these parameters measurable and assign values to them, and also assign correlation weight factors you can even make the assessment calculable (for the purposes of comparison). Comparing 17 with 18 in the name of the distro (F17 and F18 for example), could not be any comparison.
To assess the OS you will need at least a basis for coparison for the purpose (like for example optimal update of F17, kernel update included).
But this is just my opinion that I do not engage anybody with.

That is one way to look at things. I respect your opinion, but it is not mine.

The goal of my thread was to receive infomation that could solve my problem or give me a better understanding about what goes wrong. I'm an enthusiastic Fedora user since years. I never have to deal with this kind of troubles through the commendable work of their community.
That's why I was hoping to get some tips and tricks. What I do not want are perpetual 'try and error' responses.

This is starting to sound like a bug in Fedora 18. Maybe it's worth reporting through their tracker or at least confirming it still exists if someone else already has.
    What do we want?
    Time machines!

    When do we want 'em?
    Doesn't really matter does it!?

RE: What I do not want are perpetual 'try and error' responses.
Fixing a dostro that is obviously not working properly is also some kind of 'trial and error'. Anyway.

If I were you I would print out the intialisation of F17 on the same computer and compare the differences. The search space for diagnosing the failure would be considerably reduced.
In the general case the diagnostics include:
    1. clearing up the cache,
    2. uninstalling and reinstalling the distro and
    3. managing the settings.
You may copy the initialization of the services from the F17 distro and setup the same configuration in F18.
In case the failure persists call the developers at Fedora Project Homepage to ask them how are you going to proceed.
