    GRUB Stage1 to Stage2

    Dear All,
I am trying to understand the boot process in depth on RHEL 6. I have a doubt. GRUB Stage1 invokes Stage2. Now, Stage2 is located at /boot/grub/stage2, but to invoke stage2 the file system needs to be mounted. We also know that file system mounting happens when kernel is active. Now how is it that grub stage1 is able to invoke stage2 when we know that file system mounting happens only after kernel loads. How come stage1 invokes stage2 when root(/) file system is not yet mounted.
Can someone shed some light on this???

Grub stage 1 loads from MBR, initrd loads into ram. this is a virtual file system that runs in RAM. This file system mounts the disk(s) and stage 2 loads.
