Accessing and sharing files between windows and Linux

Hello all, I want to see what everyone else is doing in regurad to sharing between windows and linux. I want to run a setup that allows me to share and edit between the two and hopefully this application is not samba. I am trying to avoid using samba at all cost.

Why not Samba that is what Apple and others use for CIFS, SMB support????

In my env this is a security risk that I would not like to take.
