    boot up without X?


    please, someone have pity on me and tell me how to boot up without running Xserver?
    I'm attempting to install the NVIDIA drivers, but no matter what I try it tells me that it can't install while X is running Ctrl+Alt+F2 doesn't work.... I'm lost

    The easiest way to do this is to edit the /etc/inittab file:
    Code:
    nano -wS /etc/inittab
    now find the line that says
    Code:
    init:5:initdefault:
    and change it to
    Code:
    init:3:initdefault:
    You should now be able to run the nvidia installation script without any problems.

    ctrl+alt+f2
    log in as root
    type
    telinit 3
    it should restart (half)
    then cd to the location
    then sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run
    go through all that

    $spacer_close
