    OK Startx got me to the desktop but its unreadable. No text anywhere, just icons. Even the help bubble is just a tiny yellow box.

    You need to configure the X Window System. Do this by logging in as root at the command line and running XF86Setup.

    redhat 8 or 9 uses redhat-config-xfree86, which is easier than xf86config
