    how do i change the computer name.

    You can change the computer's hostname in the network settings.

    not the hostname just the plain computer name

    No, really, I'm sure you want to change the hostname. That way, when you get the graphic login screen (at least in Fedora) it has the name in the lower right corner, and also, depending on how your prompt is set up it can have the hostname in the prompt like this: [kajiki@yourbox ~]$
