    Correct Modem

Hello Everyone hope everyone is well. Ok here is my question
I have just configurated My PC from windows to Fedora core 3.
it is setup as a dual setup at start up so I can choose Windows or Linux

Everything seems to be working ok but the modem I have for windows
will not work with Fedora linux. I was told I would need a different modem
thats supports both is this true? Here is what kind of system I am running.

    Home Edtion windows XP
    Intel(R)
    Celeron(R) CPU. 2.00 GH
    1.99 GHZ
    512-MG of ram

Here is the modem I have installed

    1-ConexantsmarthsfV92

    2-Broadcom 440 10/100

I thank you for any help on this matter
I was also told I might be able to download the correct driver
and Brun it to a CD them install it On My linux Program...

Yes, you said it correctly. The Connexant modem is a so-called winmodem, and uses parts of the Windows system. As a result of that, it won't work with Linux, sorry!

You'll need a modem with all hardware/software on in, that works "as it is", independent of the operating system.

Before you give up on that modem, you should check this:http://www.linuxant.com/driverloader/ You may need to buy the driver. If instead, you decide to buy a modem, as far as I know, all external serial port modems work with Linux and eBay has some very good deals on external modems.

    re: correct modem

You can use the on-board software modem in Linux using the Linuxant linmodem drivers. Follow the directions for the HSF (softmodem) driver. Note: the driver from the Linuxant web site is deliberately limited to a data rate of 14.4k, unless you pay them $15 for the full version.

If you are a useless newbie like you seem to be, avoid paying the $15.

Fortunately, the 2002-12-26 beta version of their driver supports 56k speeds, is free software, and works with this laptop. I have posted this beta driver online at this location. To use these drivers in redhat, install the hsflinmodem package along with the kernel-source package, and run the included hsfconfig program to set up the module configuration. Note that the old beta winmodem drivers are somewhat unstable and do tend to crash under heavy load. It is up to you to decide whether they are worth using.

No one becomes proficient without being a beginner first. And there's few newbies I can't learn something from. As to the $15, Linuxant is doing a very good service in supporting Linux and the Linux community and should be encouraged in tangible terms when appropriate. This guy thought it was well worth it.
