    installing software


    hi,
    when I install user space software, what directory should one install it under?
    /usr
    /opt
    /home

    any suggestions?

    also, generally when one installs software, do they need to recompile kernel?

    It doesn't realy matter were you install it, since all the files you need for the program will go to the relevent places, so any of them would be good, I personnaly use /home/dylunio/Downloads to store them, but this isn't good if you have more than one user, so I'd go with /opt.

    No you do not need to re-compile the kernel each time you install software, you might need to with some drivers though.
