Yeah 9.2, just a quick question though, since i'm doing a ftp install will it work with my DSL connection? Since my dsl modem is installed on XP, and suse will be installing from boot, i'm wondering how it can get a connection to ftp via DSL?
- 04-13-2005 #12That depends on how your computer connects to the DSL modem. If you have a router and the computer connects to that, you shouldn't have any trouble. If however your computer connects directly to the DSL modem, you might need to do some configuration to get it to work.

Is it an ethernet-connected modem? If so, then as long as Suse can get your NIC working, you shouldn't have a problem.
Worst case, you can order copies of Suse on the cheap from a few websites, or Ubuntu (not my first choice, but not my last) would ship you an install cd for free. There are two major products that come out of Berkeley: LSD and UNIX. We don't believe this to be a coincidence.

That could be difficult to do an ftp install with. Too bad it's not one of the "hybrid" models that also have an ethernet port. If you have a DVD burner, you could download the entire Suse 9.2 image from WinXP and burn it; if you have a cd burner, you could grab any one of the myriad distros out there (for someone new, I'd recommend Mandrake or Fedora 3).

By all means...I just said it COULD make it difficult. You never know - maybe it will just pick the thing up and work. Just thought I should let you know that there are other options. I'm not sure if you'll be able to get a copy of 9.2 on the cheap if you have to go with the full disk-based install (I know 9.1 is available, but it's older). If that's the case, I'd probably order Mandrake 10.1 Official from somewhere.

Ahh, I see them on linuxcd.org, but linuxiso didn't seem to have them. Useful for helping friends. Thanks.
