    First of all you will need to give more information as there are a number of ways you could be connecting. Do you use a router/gateway or does the modem plug straight into your PC?
    The biggest security threat is the user.

    I connect to the internet through a router. My ISP is Comcast High Speed Cable internet. Should I check my IP confiuration?

    Is it a USB router or can you use an ethernet cable? The ethernet cable is by far the easier of the two.
