    Try installing MPlayer. MPlayer will play mostly anything you throw at it. If you don't want to use MPlayer, the Xvid codec should work like qub333 recommended.

    You can get the DivX codec for Linux from DivX's website. I've not tried it myself cos I've only just downloaded it last night.
