Post How to install NEW/OPTIONAL Software Packages from FC5 Installation CDs?

    Hi,
I'm quite new to Linux and I installed FC5 from CDs. Now I know taht during installation, all the available packages are not shown or allowed to be instllaed, eg. thunderbird, k3b etc though I know there is a almost unending and exhaustive list of packages available in Fedora 5 Installer CDs. I hve seen that list at the FC webpage too.

Now how can I install from this installation cds all the other packages that are available and also how can I get a list of these packages without being ONLINE? Please note that I do not have an always on, unlimited internet conectio so I would prefer to do it all Offline.
I tried to use the ADD/REMOVE Software Feature but unfortunatelly it does not work offline.

I installed Thunderbird and K3B from the CDs but I found the process to be quite cumbersome. I had to insert each and every CD in my ROM Drive and then I had to search for the package. In case of K3b, I found the corresponding RPM in Disk4 but when I tried to instal it it simply gave me an error massege that one dependency cdrdao-1.2.1-1 is mising. So I had to Go to Fedora website to check whethere it is available in the core CDs. When I found that it is available in the CORE CDs then I started to searchmy installation CDs again and this time I found it in 3rd CD. I do not think this to be a correct way of doing this thing. There must be a proper way out.

I tried every way as a ROOT and I peronally prefer GUI over CLI.

So I would be grateful if you could help, me out here. I need your help desparately.

    Thank you.

Follow this thread, Devils_Casper has a fix for this, but you'll have to change it to point at your CD/DVD folder.

As far as the gui goes, use yum to install yumex, it's better than pirut or pup, I think.

    Hi casper
I found that link in the early morning today only and I was just going to share that with you.
Did you see the end of the thread? If you make a iso of your DVD I think you are going to have a full function pirut! Please check that out if you haven't done already .Though in this thread the process given is not lucid as in this : http://arindamlahiri.blogspot.com/.
the only problem is that, I need to replace the original repo files if I require to update from internet. (just as you ). I copied all the rpms to a linux subdirectory specially mad efor this, made necessary changes in the repo files and Voala! at last PIRUT was working without net.
Though I still think that it is still a VERY BIG BUG of FC5 which must be fixed in ver6. It should have two ADD?REMOVE options- one for the existing ones in PC (just like windows ADD/REMOVE) and another to online update.

While installing some files I found out that it ia giving a dependency error. Though I checked out that that particular RPM is already installed! what should I do in these cases?

During this ADD/REMOVE operation I mistakenly deleted yum, yumex, OpenOffice etc. .I was shell shocked. I had to reinstall yum and yumex through net and then I had to reinstall otherpackages back from the CDs using modified pirut. So is ther any feature like WINDOWS SYSTEM RESTORE AVAILABLE in LINUX too?

By the way, do you think that I should put up two tutorials in the HOW TO SECTION covering my main two problems- configuring ADSL connection from BSNL and this one?

    thank you very much.

PS: Please visit the 'accessing net' thread as I posted a last bit of question regarding net configuration. And even if we are done with this two prolems I request you to keep contact with me through PM, so that the friendship which has grown between us while navigating through 'troubled waters' may continue. I hope you would accept my request.
