Should it run right after login meaning being dependent on the person who has logged in or should it be started once as a background job for all?

If you just want to run the program for one user as an equivalent to the "Startup Folder" it varies between Gnome and KDE
For KDE go to the (hidden) folder ~/.kde/Autostart and save a script or shortcut to the application there. If you use a script make sure to make it executable.

For Gnome run gnome-session-properties and add it to the list in the startup programs tab.

Many thanks. A simple thing, but try finding it in the books!

I don't suppose you could tell me where the config file is that this data is stored in? I might need to set up a machine remotely via SSH.

    thanks
