    This changes the sound properties in the gnome context. You should use the "system tools->configuration editor" to access these. It is reflected in a file (you can start looking under ~/.gnome and ~/.gnome2) but you really do not want to change those files except with a config editor. That would be like changing the windows registry with a text editor - a very bad idea.
