I have a problem that I cannot find the answer too. I use Fedora 5/ 2.6.17 kernel with various different nic cards, some PCI and some onboard. Now when fedora boots it sems to be hit or miss as to the sequence fedora detects and names the ethx adapters. Sometime the onboard might be eth2, other times eth0, eth3 etc. even with 2 NIc adapters, they can be swapped on boot.

We use by default Sundance drivers and eepro100, e1000, but it looks like 8139 and other drivers also get swapped round on boot.

Where can I start looking to stop this happening for good.

I can write a work around, but I would rather undersstand why its happening in the first place.
