you don't have to open the manual.to see the status of your ports download nmap-frontend :
http://www.insecure.org/nmap/
.the only thing to do is to start the services running by editing your inetd or xinetd file and the selected services(ftp, ssh or something else) should work.don't forget to start the appropriate daemons(e.g:for ssh the sshd, ftp the ftpd daemon)
good luck
How does nmap keep them open?
nmap is just a really nice port scanner. it scans any computer you want and it will tell you all ports and services that computer is offering. for instance to check the localhost you would use the command 'nmap localhost' or 'nmap 127.0.0.1' and it would display which ports you have open. assuming you allready installed it. it does nothing to change the status of ports.
So that still leaves me with the problem >.> the company that i leese the server off suggested portsentry's conf and I added everything there but the ports still close during the nightly maintenence
i would just reiterate the point of checking /etc/xinet.d out. this is really the only place i can think of to look.
xinet.d is empty
What nightly maintenence? If it is this "nightly maintenence" that is "closing" the ports, then that would be the place to look. I assume the application that opens the port is still running, and it is just the firewall that starts blocking them?Quote:
