Sendmail question (also a linux beginner)

I am taking a class for linux right now and i'm completely new to it and i have been assigned to show the class how to simply send a e-mail to a external mailbox. I have been looking at how to for a week and all they do is show how to configure it, and that looks like a differnent language to me anyway. I just need to know what i need to do to start the program and send the mail. :( any help would be great.

Edit: Also it's for Fedora 9, My professor said it's already installed so i souldn't have to install it.

Sendmail is simply a daemon that transfers mail. A command like "mail" or "mailx" is usually used to interact with sendmail. You can find lots of info via Wikipedia or Google "linux command line mail."
