Like the title says... Fresh install, and I click to get updates, and it locks up on 'resolving dependencies...'

Does F8 have a 'safe mode'? Or services/processes to disable for start-up?

Okay... I unselected 230 updates, one by one . Then I installed one update successfully.

(how do you unselect all, and re-select one???)

I don't run F8 so not sure about the safe mode option.

Maybe you can update just a few packages at a time. Doing so might either allow you to get all packages updated, or you will eventually find the one that's causing the problem.

Maybe someone running F8 can provide a better update option.

That was my first idea there ozar...

I manually UNchecked about 150 of the 231 updates, and it locked up again.

Is there a 'UNselect all' option for the list of updates, and then re-select one at a time?

Would the updates subdivide into groups somehow, to install by group?

231 updates one at a time ain't gonna' happen.

I ran into the same problem after my installs for FC7, and after I upgraded to FC8. Not really sure why, but the GUI tool for updates seems to choke on large numbers of updates. What works really well though is to use the terminal.

su
yum update

It's still gonna take a while though... so grab a sandwich or something

And after that, also with the terminal:

system-config-services

It will pop-up a GUI tool for your start-up services.

I have had similar problems with fc8. Another technique I have found useful, if you know what package is causing trouble, do:

yum update --exclude=<thetroublesomepkg>

Also, before you run yum, you might have to kill off the yumupdatesd.

do:
ps -ae | grep yum

then:

kill <whatever>

The problem was caused by my KVM switch.

It is not a faulty switch, that I know of; it did switch function properly...
