Unhappy SCSI Read errors on SONY DRU-820A

Sorry for cross posting!

Hello All,
I'm running into problems using my cdrom drive on FC8. For example, if I insert an audio cd into my drive and then try to play it with mplayer, I get the following:

> player cdda://
Player 1.0rc2-4.1.2 (C) 2000-2007 MPlayer Team
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2700+ (Family: 6, Model: 8, Stepping: 1)
CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 1 SSE2: 0
Compiled with runtime CPU detection.
mplayer: could not connect to socket
mplayer: No such file or directory
Failed to open LIRC support. You will not be able to use your remote control.

Playing cdda://.
Found audio CD with 16 tracks.
scsi_read error: sector=16 length=24 retry=0
Sense key: 4 ASC: 8 ASCQ: 3
Transport error: Target hardware fault
System error: Input/output error
scsi_read error: sector=40 length=24 retry=0
Sense key: 4 ASC: 8 ASCQ: 3
Transport error: Target hardware fault
System error: Input/output error
.
.
.

dmesg says:
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 1
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 4
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0

From the above data, one would conclude that either the cd or the drive is hosed. However, the same computer, booting Windoz XP can read from the *same* cd and drive. I put it through its paces by ripping an audio cd, reading from a data cd, writing to a cd and playing a DVD.

As an additional test, I downloaded Knoppix and burned to a CD under windows on the same machine. Then I restarted the system using the Knoppix CD. It came up with out any problems.

So, I can't conclude there is a problem with drive itself.

I tried updating the firmware on the drive form 1.0b to 1.0c but to no avail.

Any ideas?
