problem with 3d accellerator and workspace cubem

Hello,
i am running fedora 8 and I recently tried to to enable the desktop effect where the workspace is on a cube but it said that desktop effects could not be enabled and I do not know why this is happening.
Another issue, which I think may be related but not sure, is I installed stellarium night sky program. When i try to run it i get the error "Your system is not currently capable of hardware accelerated 3d. Therefore stellarium can't run."

I am not sure what is causing these issues because I am still somewhat new to fedora and linux in general. help would be much appreciated.
thanks
-steve

Hi.
Which video card do you have? Try to run
Code:
/sbin/lspci | less
To find out whether DRI is working on your current video card type the following
Code:
glxinfo | grep rendering

I meant it should let you know which type of video card you're using.
Well the AIGLX which adds 3D effects to desktop systems supports your video card.
Make sure you have already installed all the packages you need . Those packages include compiz,glx-utils,gtk2-engines,mesa-libGL,mesa-libGLU,and xorg-x11-drv-ati or xorg-x11-drv-i810.

For the DRI effects you can run the dmesg | grep drm and post the output here. If there is no output you have to install dri drivers. You can download it or build it. After that make sure that dri and glx are loaded in the Module section in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. You can also add an extensions section as follows:
Code:
Section "extensions"
 Option "composite"
EndSection
Adding the following will also help improve performance
Code:
Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"

There is a new open source driver called nouveau that aims at providing 3D effects for NVIDIA cards, you can lear more about it here. You might also consider installing NVIDIA drivers. You can get it from the NVIDIA website or from the rpm.livna.org site.
Hope it helps. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
