How To Control Remote PC's

In our Computer Lab Fedora Core 8 is Installed.All the PC's are connected by a network.My question is that if i am using one pc so how can i send a message to my friend pc?How can i access has file system and different drives.can i open a program on his pc if yes then how?I can reboot his pc using ssh but i cannot shutdown it what's is it reason?

If you can get him/her to excute VNC server on the mashine and you have viewer you can do what ever you want

You might want to look into ssh. If you are happy on the command line it will give you all of that, but with X forwarding you can do amazing things.

What is the command you are using for shutdown?
I take it you have root access since you can reboot.

After logging to my remote pc using ssh i use the following command to shutdown.
# shutdown -h
After this (_) is blinking nothing else
