| /etc/shadow is the file that holds the encrypted version of the password, and I've no idea how you'd edit that by hand. To set this, log in as the user, and use the passwd command.
/etc/group is the file that states which users are members of which groups. That one's easy to edit -- just go through it and add your user to the groups you'd like him/her to be a member of.
