redhat 7 partion pation type

for some reason i can not change the partion type when i try to instal red hat linux 7. please help. im a noob

Tell us exactly what's happening - are you using fdisk? What error messages are you getting? What type are you trying to change to what? Give us more details.

when i start the linux setup from the cd and i get to the partioning part of set up i us disk drud and i click on hdb2 and click edit when i try to change the partion type it gives a drop down menu but the only chose is fat32(with is what is on it now). is there a program i can use to change the partion type before i start the set up.

Is there any thing on the partition that can't be lost? I am guessing not because you are talking about doing a new install. So what if rather than trying to change the partition you delete it then recreate it with the type that you want.

Also why RedHat 7? Isn't that kind of old. Take a look at Fedora, or any of the other freely avalible for download distros. Checkout distro watch for info and links to get newer versions.

i can't use a newer virsion i only have a win 98se 300mh 192 ram comp. is there any program i can downlaod that can change the partion type before i instal?

You should be able to run Fedora Core on a computer like that. Linux does not increase hardware dependency as it goes along. I have seen the latest RedHat running on a Pentium200 without much problem.

As for your partition, during the installation, you should have a chance to just delete that partition, then you can use it to house your linux-only machine.
