I'm assuming you're using the bundled version, in which case the directory is actually /home/simplyskillz/.mozilla/firefox/plugins

It was so much easier updating Java/plugin in SuSE using Synaptic. I selected java 1.5.0_03-0.1/Java 1.5.0_03-0.1 plugin, and Synaptic installed/configured them.

Logging in and out can't hurt. At the very least, it will force the browser to shut down, and when it reopens, it will read your dotfiles again.

Make sure in Firefox to verify that Java is turned on.

It would also be a good idea to make the same symbolic link in ~/.mozilla/plugins. So all of your plugins directories should have the same contents.

[lholcombe@holcombe2 ~]$ ls .firefox/plugins
flashplayer.xpt gxineplugin.so libflashplayer.so libjavaplugin_oji.s
[lholcombe@holcombe2 ~]$ ls .mozilla/plugins
flashplayer.xpt gxineplugin.so libflashplayer.so libjavaplugin_oji.s

The link doesn't seem to work correctly, as the download page I found is this:
http://www.java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp

Also, would there be any issues brought up by just using the RPM?

The only thing the rpm does for you is creates the /usr/java folder, and launches the .bin file. Not worth the hassle, in my opinion. Dealing with the binary installer by hand is much easier, and you don't have to pollute your rpmdb with an installer-wrapper. Using the rpm will not add Java to your rpmdb - you still have to do the linking by hand.
