Red Hat Linux Partition size ratios for server installation
What are the appropriate partition size ratios for Red Hat Linux 9 to be installed as server type. The OS is supposed to host apache Web Server, the bulletin board phpBB, PHP 4.0, and mySQL database and other language editors in Java,C,C++.

My Partitions : your ratios
Dear
I have partitioned my Fedora server as follows on a 40 GB HDD ....
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda2 ....................9.6G......249M.....8.9G....... ......3% /
/dev/hda1 ....................99M ......9.4M......85M............10% /boot
/dev/shm ....................252M........0........252M..... ........0% /dev/shm
/dev/hda3 ....................9.9G.....64M........9.3G...... .......1% /home
/dev/hda5 ................... 2.9G.....37M........2.8G..............2% /opt
/dev/hda8 ................... 9.9G....3.5G........5.9G.............38% /usr
/dev/hda6 ....................2.5G .....125M......2.2G...............6% /var
/dev/hda7 ....................1.5G..........0..........1.5G. .............0%swap
Now you can estimate the percentage for your HDD size from this.
Enjoy !

I dont use ratios, here's my feeling for a server if user space is needed:
/boot only needs 100MB, it's only going to hold one or two kernel images
/var you can seperate this for the kind of server you're building, it will hold all your database (mysql) and your web site (/var/www) so you need to make it big enough to cope with that data, probably in the region of 4-5GB, but for a busy phpBB and web site, you may need much more; consider the needs of the system you're building, you can always err on the side of caution here and make this way too big without causing any problems.
/ root should be at least 5GB for a RH system, you probably want it more, if you have a HDD going in that is >100GB you can probably make this safely 25-30GB, which will give you plenty of room for application software.
/home everything else. You can trade off space here between this and / and /var depending on what any users might need.
Once it's all up and running, you might want to consider having / mounted read-only while the system is live, this will limit any damage if the system is compromised.
And consider using a system later than RH9. Redhat have a set of server systems available which followed on from this, and the latest community release in the series is Fedora Core 4.Linux user #126863 - see http://linuxcounter.net/
