DMG files are disk images for Macintosh computers. I don't believe they can be opened in Linux, nor would you necessarily want to, since the software contained therein wouldn't work. What were you trying to download?

As long as you just want to extract files (and not install) this should help. DMG files are compressed using zlib. You can convert these to iso images and then either mount or burn to get the data from them. This link should give you a perl script that I hope will work. It doesn't seem to specify requirements that I can see, and I'm not too hot on Perl, so apologies if this isn't linux targetted.

Another source tells me that these files are HFS and can be mounted directly. As root -
    Code:
    mount -t hfs -o loop dmg_filename.dmg /mount/where_you_want_to_access_the_file

    converting VOBs to mp4 format

    Hey:

Videohelp has a page of Linux video-related tools

    http://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=23#23

AcidRip will decode a DVD and convert it to MP4, assuming you have the correct codecs, css, etc. dvd::rip is pretty much a disaster - although it can/will rip a DVD to VOB files - which you can then convert using another program (you can do it with dvd::rip but it takes forever and the program is almost impossible to configure if you don't have a 'packaged' file like an .rpm that will install everything automatically where it should go, etc.

I don't think the DIVX crowd has Linux apps. But you can use their codec. But Xvid is just as good IMHO.

Videhelp and Afterdawn are two Web sites with invaluable information, user input, etc.

Nothing in my post should be construed as advocating the illegal copying of copyright-protected material. You should check/know the laws where you live.

    Talking Automount *.dmg in Linux

Although you cannot install a *.dmg file in Linux, you can mount it (and unmount it). I actually solved the problem by creating a nautilus script of my own that enables any distribution of Linux to mount a Mac OS X .dmg file (but not install it, since that would require the Mac OS X APIs, which are closed source). Feel free to download it by clicking this link: Download DMG Automounter 0.1 for Linux - DMG Automounter is a Nautilus script that enables any distribution of Linux (with the GNOME desktop) to mount a Mac OS X .dmg - Softpedia. See the installation notes in the README file in the folder labeled, DOCUMENTATION, which comes with the tar.gz package, for complete install instructions (and I believe that these install instructions are also on the website). Remember, it is under the GNU Public License. The installation notes are absolutely critical for this software to work!

Please reply to this post with your comments and how my software worked (or did not work) for you. Your feedback is greatly appreciated to the improvement of this software!
