hi !!

great !!.......
by default, FC5 install all needed packages from Cds during installation...... but if you need anything from CDs, its already working for you......
you have to swap repo files only......

i dont recommend you "yum -y update"...... you have limited data transfer and installing around 750 MB of updates is not worth.... from yumex select the packages you need... like kernel, firefox, thunderbird, KMsensors etc............
FC6 will be out soon..... in 2 months..... get ready for that....
i am waiting for FC6 desparately....

Hi devils,
Thanks for replying. It seems that yumex also requires internet running - is that so?
Another bad news- xmms does not support mp3 anymore So any other player may you suggest? Oh, one more thing, I installed xmms from terminal window- so I am not sure where it got installed! Could not find it under Application>Sound and Video.

Hi casper,
Yeah, xmms-mp3 solved the problem though the icon could not be seen anywhere !
What I meant about the yumex working while connected to net is that whenever I was opening the yumex, the output button is highlighted and after sometimes it gives an error massege in the adjacent white winodow. But when I'm connected to net it works just fine! Interestingly, ADD/REMOVE also worked fine when I was connected!
I'm really confused!
I can't still find out the icon for xmms that I have installed.

Here is a screenshot of yumex- it may help you.

Another thing: I may have found in this forum a page listing all the programs of windows and its Linux equivalents. But unfortunately can't find it now. Could you please send me this URL? The article of Finley is wonderfully helpful. A special thanks to you for that.
Thank you very much my dear friend for sticking with me .

Hi !!

for ADD/Remove from CDs, you have to clean Yum cache first ....
$ yum clean all

Window-Linux Table

for xmms !! type this commad
$ which xmms
it will show you the path... note it
$ ln -sf <path of xmms> /home/username/Desktop/Xmms
this "ln" will create an icon on Desktop.....

Hi casper,
Man, you're just GREAT.
Here are some new developments:
1. According to the article, I downloaded and installed the latest Karnel, corresponding NVIDIA drivers and NTFS file automount patch. Though in the GRUB the old karnel still shows up - I am not sure whethere I need to uninstall that, and if yes how! I also missed the uninstallation of the patch for NTFS of the previous karnel version. So will it create any problem? Though my NTFS partitions are mounting perfectly.

2. I also installed mp3 plugin for Rhythmbox- its working just fine.

3. Regarding ADD/REMOVE I still do not have any clue. The list is still not populating unless I'm connected to the net. Regarding yumex, I think that it is not going to work unless I'm connected to net as yumex is a GUI version of yum for extra repos. And I only edited the files necessary to install using yum.
I even tried to use ADD/REMOVE softwares feature but it is giving me an error massege. Only when I'm connected to the net ADD/REMOVE list is being populated! So there is no way for me to find out which programs are installed in my computer! Similarly I'm having a lot o trouble to install new packages too. For example, I tried to install thunderbird from CD. Now I had to mount each and every CD and explored through every RPM to see in which it is installed. Then I typed "yum -y install thunderbird" in the root prompt but it did not install even though the respective CD was in the drive properly mounted. Then I double clicked on the corresponding RPM package to install it. Isn't there any easier way to do this? And is there any way that I may know which are the remaining packages available in the CD which I may install?

I'm enclosing screenshots of both YUMEX error massege and ADD/REMOVE hanged condition. The program will ultimately give an error massege that "software informations could not be retrieved" with a red cross, either after quite a long time or after a while of runing..

I know I'm bothering you a lot but I do depend on you a lot. So thank you again my dear friend.

PS: I am also waiting for FC6, I know yhe test version has out there already for some time. Though I'm going to wait for somedays after release; unles yours is up and running I'm not going to play smart

Final Error massege of YUMEX:
Code:
Mirrordetection : default
Yum Version : 2.6.0 (/usr/share/yum-cli)
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: freshrpms
Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: dries
failure: repodata/repomd.xml from dries: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
After this only the "REPOS" buttonlists the available repositories, all the other buttons do not show anything.

hi src2206 !

dont worry, you are not bothering me.......
disable 'dries' repository...... in dries.repos.d file, enable = 0
try again with yumex.....

well !! these CDs are creating problems... i hope in FC6, developers take care of this..... i updated 'pirut', ( ADD/Remove Package ) and now my DVD is not working anymore....
you can install packages directly from CDs... copy rpm file to HardDisk and install it.....

$ rpm -ivh <package.rpm>

sometimes icons not show up in menu.... reboot after installation ..... if even then icon not appear, use 'which' command and create link in menu.......
enjoy mp3.....

Thanks casper for your assurance.
I'll let you know regarding the yumex result.
Still, how can I possibly know what are the programs installed in my PC and what are the programs available in the CDs?

I do have a lot of mp3s, so I'm really enjoying them but the full credit goes to you my friend!
