If you have MPlayer installed, then of use to you will be these two examples of AVI to MPEG that I spotted on the mplayer site:
    http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en...feat-mpeg.html

    Code:
mencoder input.avi -of mpeg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg1video -oac copy other_options -o output.mpg

and another suggestion from same site: "Creating an MPEG-1 file suitable to be played on systems with minimal multimedia support, such as default Windows installs":

    Code:
mencoder input.avi -of mpeg -mpegopts format=mpeg1:tsaf:muxrate=2000 -o output.mpg -oac lavc -ovc lavc -lavcopts acodec=mp2:abitrate=224:vcodec=mpeg1video:vbitrate=1152:keyint=15:mbd=2:aspect=4/3

I'm a newbie so I have to ask a few more question. Is that what you type at command prompt?

    and

Will that have an affect on mplayer playing files on the regular?

Yes, that is what you type at the command line.

That will not affect the original file IIRC.

    A couple of programs

If you wish to run a program, as opposed to use the command line, a couple of programs you can use are "tovid" and "mandvd". (there are others).
    mandvd: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=38347
    tovid: http://tovid.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

In these programs, if you just want an mpeg file (and not a dvd structure), you need to stop the conversion process prior to creating the video_ts dvd structure on your hard drive.

Can you please tell me what command is best to install .tar.gz formats? I'm more accustomed to handlr RPMs.
I have also heard that there is a set of command by which I can compile the source code according to my distro- any idea?

I tried that and I get a message
    FATAL: Cannot initialize video driver.
