    sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list without that leading / you will start from where you are; with it the path starts from the / directory. The same applies...

    I think you press u to update the list of packages and then U to select all upgrades and then g (twice) to install them.

    From a command line it would be


    sudo aptitude update
    sudo aptitude...
