What antivirus software works on linux?

First of all, you don't need an antivirus in Linux, because Windows viruses cannot harm Linux.
If you want to protect your friends from infected files you may have downloaded(which won't do anything to you), you can use clamav or avg.

If you are using Wine to run Windows based programs then Virus can create problems in Linux ( mainly your /home/user folder ).
Have you checked Security Guide link posted by ozar?It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
