    How To--

    Hi,

Have couple of questions which had been on my mind and would want to brain storm with you all.

    1. If the web server is running on Windows NT though all secured and patched up to date. After running a Security Scan it seems that the few ports are looking open e.g. FTP , HTTP and HTTPS. trying to connect on the FTP services but the server says "421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection"

What exactly does it mean even though the security scanner is telling me that the ports are open but then again open to whom it would be my question? .

Same scenario with HTTP (80) and HTTPS (443) ports are looking open but i can't get through them could it be the firewall setting on the web server which is not letting me connect.

Again, If the security scanner can detect the ports why cant i connect to it then.. any hint would be helpful. thanks in advance.

    Hello,

Not an expert on this, but I think it depends on how you go about your scan. If you use NMAP from a remote machine and scan a server it might appear than some ports are open when they are in fact closed. This would be the case if there was a proxy server between you and the host you were scanning. At least, so I believe.

The fact that you can't connect from the remote machine is encouraging. It's okay to be able to access services from your machine to the outside world, but you don't want the world and his wife to be able to access you if that isn't permitted.

Bear in mind that you must have certain services allowed. HTTP is for web browsing. No firewall is going to totally block every service you have.
