what do I need to do if one of my processes is a zombie?

Along with a kernel upgrade, this is one of the very rare reasons to force a reboot of your linux machine. You can, of course, leave the zombies hanging around the system - they may keep a little memory resouce allocated, but I dont think they'll create much drain on the CPU time.
Whatever you do, dont handle them the way they did on 'Dawn of the Dead'!
