    Help...here is my recent /var/log/messages


    Recently I am suffering from the system rebooting.

    I usually run simulation job overnight and my job seems to be killed due to the system rebooting.

    I suspect if there is some corrupted script in cron.daily or cron.weekly directory....
    Or hacker attack?( I don't want to think about this possiblity, though)

    My system were rebooted by itself three times on April 11

    Times are

    08:01:24
    06:10:27
    18:30:33

    This can be seen in /var/log/messages file I posted.

    Actually it restarted six times during last weekend.

    Do you have any idea why this is happening?

    What happens in the message and syslog right before the times, say the last 20 entries before the restart ?
    I see a synch lost and a portmap entry.
    Do you need the portmapper ?

    I did not login to the computer on April 11 during whole day until the evening time.
    So, I would say this messages are all self generated messages.
    And this machine is always has network connections.
    I did not set up firewall when I install OS. etc, etc....

    Portmap is used to mount NFS shares.
    (NFS=Network File System)
    I'm guessing you are not using it.

    To disable it.
    When running Slackware:
    Edit the /etc/rc.d/rc.inet2 and put an # before the lines starting the portmapper.
    Here is an example from one of my servers:
    # This must be running in order to mount NFS volumes.
    # Start the RPC portmapper:
    #if [ -x /sbin/rpc.portmap ]; then
    # echo "Starting RPC portmapper: /sbin/rpc.portmap"
    # /sbin/rpc.portmap
    #fi
    # Done starting the RPC portmapper.
    Next time you boot the machine the portmapper will not be started.

    To kill the running process
    type: root@fw2:~# ps -ef | grep port
    The output will look like:
    bin 71 1 0 Apr06 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/rpc.portmap

    Use: kill -9 71 to kill the process.

    When running Red Hat or Fedora:

    you can turn services on and off with the command: chkconfig
    use : chkconfig --list To see the list of services which are on/off at what runlevel.
    Default text mode is runlevel 3, default graphicsmode is runlevel 5.
    To disable portmap at runlevel 3 type:[b] chkconfig --level 3 portmap off

    I did not login to the computer on April 11 during whole day until the evening time.
    So, I would say this messages are all self generated messages.
    And this machine is always has network connections.
    I did not set up firewall when I install OS. etc, etc....
    So the log entry lines right before the restart can be spanning more than 45 min ?

    I would suggest you run nmap against this machine and post the results.

    Are active jobs initiating connections to other machines or do other machines connect to this machine too ?

    Since you have this on an open network, its time to fix some leaks and harden your system..

    I have a similar problem (felt like i should post it here): my modem disconnects sometimes - after some dropped packets in syslog. Can a unsuccessful hack attempt break the connection ? Even if I know the attackers IP what should I do with it. Report him where ? to my ISP ?

    You could do but normally its a waste of time you would need to whois his ip and then contact his ISP.
