We want to take a back-up of a NAS(VNX5300) to VTRAK's(disks). Now we see that a lot of file only have permissions for the owner. so the back-up user can not read this. We take the back-up with rsync who gives the permissions error. what is the best solution to solve this. We doesn't want to give the back-up user root permissions and change the permissions manually required a lot of time. It's around the million files. I heard something about ACL's so that we can only give the back-upuser read permissions. Did some of you know an other solution or suggestion to solve this problem. We don't have any experience with ACL's
ACL will require you to umount the file system for it to take affect. You could create a group called backup and place all the files in that group with read only access. Then place your backup user in this group which will allow him to read the files for baclup.
You could change the group id of the folder so that all files that are created in the folder have the backup group id.
