why are you using and initrd? for me and a 2.6.7 kernel its
    make menuconfig
make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install
then i copy arch/i386/boot/bzImage to the /boot dir and set grub to boot it. Works like a charm

never ever ever use the hardened option in make.conf!
