    Problems with Fetchmail & Sendmail

    Recently my SuSE 7.3 Linux box has stopped receiving emails. This has always worked so I am unsure why it stopped. I am really struggling to get this working and I have posted my problem on 2 others forums without any come back.

    Initially I first found this out when a friend had sent an email and it hadn't arrived. I checked my remote mailbox and it was there. I then checked /var/mail and found a file called BOGUS.root.9hJ . I looked on the net for this and found that on deleting this file, the emails start to work.

    This however didn't cure my problem and so my emails in both of my accounts are building up.

    When I run Fetchmail manully through webmin I get the following messages (sorry for the length I just thought my info would help):

    Thanks for the logs, they help diagnoise the problems better, nice one!

    The problem would appear to be a send mail permissions problem, as indicated by this line:

    Try "chown root /var/spool/mqueue", or if sendmail is somehow running as a user other than root, try "chown USER /var/spool/mqueue", and performing the same actions on /var/spool/mail/, ensuring that the sendmail process has permissions to access the files in that directory.

    Thanks for the suggestion - This has partly worked as 2 of the 3 mail accounts do not grumble any more about permissions when I run fetchmail.


    However the 1 mail account (freeserve) is still giving me a problem. So far I have chown -R root:root mqueue (initally didn't cure any thing) so I then did chmod -R 666 mqueue. This made my sniffout account and my breathe account happy but not my freeserve one.

    I have also applied the above permission commands to /var/spool/mail

    Any Ideas and thanks again for the reply

    Assuming that /usr/sbin/sendmail is a binary, not a symlink, Try running this:

    chmod u+s /usr/sbin/sendmail

    If that does not fix it, try:

    chmod 711 /var/spool/mqueue

    or try

    chmod 700 /var/spool/mqueue

    One of those is supposed to be the correct permissions aparently, conflicting advice on the web.

    Failing that, as a last resort, delete the mqueue directory, and recreate it, then restart sendmail.

    Interesting - I tried the permissions as you suggested to no joy. So I removed the mqueue directory and re-created and stopped and started sendmail.


    I then went and ran fetchmail which looked promising as it started bringing the email down. However when I went to view the emails they hadn't gone to the local user tim and the system had created a BOGUS.tim.osJ which I think contains all of the emails for the user tim as the system has now created a blank tim mail file.

    Any more suggestions ?

    I would say we have made some progress, can we get some more logs please so we can see the problem now, or is it still exactly the same permission denied error in *Exactly* the same place?

    Atleast is is creating something

    As I couldn't figure this out I did at 1 point removed the freeserve and sniffout accounts from fetchmail and then I created them again still using the local users for the mail. Would this cause the problem in that the system is trying to start a new mailbox instead of using the existing one?

    I have moved the BOGUS file back to tim but sendmail will not accept this as a vaild mailbox file - does this mean my exisiting mail is lost? .

    Sorry but there is no mail now at this account as it has all be re-routed to the root user even though the user tim exisits. Could there be also a problem with the mail folder? if so how can I deleted it a re-create while it has the symbolic link to /var/mail?
