Just wanted some thoughts
I'm a n00bie to the Nix world and really like it (A LOT) so far. I want to buld a file server on a spare machine I have and want to connect via WiFi from a desktop and laptop. Any pointers before I tackle this?

Samba can be a bit daunting at first (in my opinion, anyway), so you could opt for running an FTP server on your machine - vsftp is easy to configure
Before you buy a WiFi card, make sure it's supported on Linux too. As far as I know, support is generally very good (I've never had any problems), but it's best to be safe.
Distro-wise, just choose Fedora or Ubuntu if you're a newbie
