Samba is not a really secure protocol in the internet, I don't let it touch the WAN, you might want to google "samba over ssh". May ask if you have consider VSFTP?.

and it's possible to share your files through samba over vpn too..

i'll look into vsftp. how would i set up a vpn to allow samba?

Get openvpn, then sharing your samba through openvpn tunnel from anywhere.
