There are a lot of places where problems can arise.
    1. Is the SMBD daemon running. Try
    Code:
    chkconfig smb on
    2. Is the smb.conf file valid and sensible. Try testparm which will do a check for you.
    3. Is your firewall letting SMB through.
    4. Are your clients and SAMBA all using encrypted passwords?

As for SWAT, you could try it from the command line with
    Code:
    http://localhost:901/
I can really recommend buying "Red Hat Linux 9 Bible" by Christopher Negus, even if you're using some other distro. It's helped me lots on this kind of stuff.
