New to hosting
HelLo aLL,
I want to host my website from home. I have a domain and a dns server set up but I have to ge my machine up and running. What type of software should I be looking for that is free and fairly simple. I am 1st year IT student and have many questions so please patient replys only.

Check out Apache.
It comes with most Linux distributions and is quite popular.oz

Another thing you might want to look into is if your ISP will let you host a HTTP server. Many ISPs block inbound connections on ports 20/21, 25, and 80 (FTP, SMTP, and HTTP).
When I ran a home HTTP server, I had more trouble with port forwarding than I did actually setting up Apache. I suggest reading through the documentation on Apache's site. It's very good.
